Lungo il perimetro dell'acropoli storica di Gangi si muove un corpo devozionale unico, nato dal sincretismo tra diverse forme di culto alla terra. Alla Grande Madre sono rivolti i canti e ad essa si chiede protezione per la fertilità dei campi, per il mantenimento di un equilibrio costante nel ritmo delle stagioni e nella lotta ad ogni forma di sopruso. Affinché il rito possa svolgersi, è necessario un sacrificio. Se epurata, la comunità può giovarne, perché la spiga può maturare sotto la protezione della Grande Madre. All'interno del Corteo di Demetra si ripropongono gesti, canti, balli e racconti che hanno costruito l'identità del paese di Gangi. Esso offre uno spaccato della vita dei campi, in cui il lavoro culminava con la mietitura, considerata un momento critico. Da quell'istante si sarebbe estratto a sorte il futuro di un'intera comunità e la benevolenza divina era fondamentale. Riscoprendo l'intimo e profondo legame con la liturgia pagana, si analizza l'evoluzione del fervore agreste. A corroborare questa linea è un'area di interesse storico e archeologico sita nella vicina Alburchìa, in cui diversi studiosi hanno individuato i resti di un antico insediamento cretese. È inevitabile notare all'interno del corteo questo connubio devozionale, che mette in collegamento distanti mondi culturali e religiosi, che si incontrano nel presente nella sacrale unione tra l'uomo e la terra.
A unique devotional body moves along the perimeter of Gangi's historic acropolis, being born from the syncretism between several types of Earth worship. The songs are dedicated to the Great Mother, asking for her protection for the fertility of the fields, for the maintenance of a constant balance in the rhythm of the seasons and the fight against all kinds of oppression. In order for the rite to take place, a sacrifice must be done. If purified, the community can benefit from it, as the wheat can mature under the protection of The Great Mother. Within Demetra’s Procession, gestures, chants, dances, and tales that built the identity of Gangi are presented. It offers a slice of the life in the fields, where the work culminated with the reaping, considered to be a crucial step. From that moment, the future of an entire community would be drawn from a hat, and the divine goodwill was essential. By rediscovering the intimate and deep bond with the pagan liturgy, the evolution of the camped fervour is observed. An area of historic and archaeological interest where several scholars have identified the ruins of an ancient Cretan settlement, located in the nearby Alburchìa, has confirmed such way of thinking. Within the Procession, such devotional union cannot go unnoticed, linking two far apart cultural and religious worlds, that meet each other in the present, in the sacral union between the humankind and the Earth.
