Demeter’s Procession opens with the Engium Folk Group. Thus begins the entire devotional body dedicated to the Great Mother, through choreographed performances that embody the Dance in the Threshing Yard: the moment following the harvest. Step by step, this dance silently reenacts the entire process of the wheat cycle. This first rhythm is set in motion by the soundtrack of the entire event, performed by the Santa Cecilia Musical Band Association of Gangi. What follows is a more detailed representation of the various stages of the wheat production cycle and the activities connected to it. By cyclically reconstructing the order of nature, an attempt is made to restore order to time and to the Community. Through the celebration, this society pays tribute to itself and to its unique cultural identity, freeing itself from the veils imposed by contemporary capitalist society.

The Seed, through its apparent death in the darkness of the earth, becomes a vital force that rises to offer us Wheat, the sole element capable of overcoming the primordial opposition between Death and Life. From this emerges its profound mythical power, through which it is associated with those divine entities that symbolize the triumph of life over death: the Mother Goddesses. The sweat poured out over months and months of preparation finds its reward when the product of human labor allows an entire community to survive and endure another year. Divine benevolence therefore becomes essential, granted only through mystical sacrifice, understood as an inaugural harmony under the sign of rebirth. Today, the procession is a single devotional body in which memory intertwines with rural fervor.

Here, the sense of honor and blindness in the face of danger, wisdom and recklessness, joy and melancholy, define the boundaries of a land of glory and turmoil, of truth and horror. This small community once praised those who had led an entire system toward collapse, delaying for decades the movements that, elsewhere, had already revolutionized and rebuilt entire territories from the ground up. Even today, many believe they lived under the protection of visionary figures, leaders considered capable of extending their vision beyond the present. Yet the reality of power is very different from its appearance. A leader knows very little of the world that surrounds him and is often able to transform it even less: he remains enclosed within his own feudo, his private stronghold. These are iconic figures within the historical fabric of the village: the Baron, u Suvrastanti, and u Campiri. The latter, carrying his lupara, kept constant watch, ensuring that the sharecroppers worked and, above all, that they did not steal anything. This weapon was often used to settle disputes or to impose armed control over territories contested by rival families. The figure of the Baron was one that caused harm to Freedom itself. From afar, hundreds of peasants’ gazes turned toward the manor, all belonging to the same master and sharing the same feudal destiny. Yet, during the era of brigandage, that manor became a fortress.

The women and men who live from the fields entrust their prayers to the Great Mother, hoping that they may be heard. For this reason, the Great Mother is not only the goddess of the harvest, but also a figure invoked against every form of oppression. The pleas are not received by a master, but by the Great Mother. She gives them the strength to endure hardship and makes the earth fertile once more. Within the fire burns a desire that has never been fulfilled. The devotional spirit is awakened once more, and from the seed, life flows again.

The Procession of Demeter is a historical and folkloric procession, in which theatrical and choreographic elements reveal the cultural and ritual identity of Gangi. Through it, the dialect comes alive, capable of evoking images and emotions belonging uniquely to this community, within the sacred bond between human beings and the earth.

The intimate and profound connection with pagan liturgy is tangible. Supporting this interpretation is an archaeological area of interest located in nearby Alburchìa, where several scholars have identified the remains of an ancient Cretan settlement. The Great Mother is therefore accompanied by her kin: Hermes, Hephaestus, Athena, Aphrodite, Apollo, Hestia, Hebe, Dionysus, Artemis, Ares, Zeus, Hera, Hades, and Persephone. The ecstatic cults of pagan origin intertwine with more recent religious history, creating a devotional body unique in its nature and spirit.
